UPDATE: Hot Lesbian Sheep Action!

As you might have read, I found an odd domain that was sharing the same server as Presidential re-election site WWW.GEORGEWBUSH.COM.

The domain in question: WWW.HOTLESBIANSHEEPACTION.COM.

I found it by performing a reverse IP lookup at WHOIS.SC. An IP lookup will tell you what domains share the same Internet Protocol or IP number. In theory, when domains share the same IP number, it means they are all hosted on the same webserver. At the time of my January post, WWW.GEORGEWBUSH.COM shared the same IP number as these domains:

WWW.HOTLESBIANSHEEPACTION.COM WWW.JOHNKERREY.ORG WWW.SAUDIS.NET WWW.WARISBAD.INFO

Mind you, a supposed porn domain sharing a server with a decidedly non-porn domain is rather common. What struck me as curious was that HOTLESBIANSHEEPACTION redirected to the main site for the Republican National Committee. Even stranger, days after my January posting, all five sites were moved and were sharing an IP with all the sites from the RNC server. A week or so later, the five domains were back on a separate IP.

I tracked down the guy who owns HOTLESBIANSHEEPACTION. It wasn't hard to do and if you read my January post, you can figure out how I did it.

I emailed the guy and wrote:

"Did you know that your domain http://www.hotlesbiansheepaction.com is sharing a server with the domain http://www.georgwbush.com ?"

Here's his reply:

"It isn't, actually. Long story:

For years, whenever I needed to say a generic porn site name, I'd always say "hotlesbiansheepaction.com". I'd usually follow this up with "which still is not registered". One day, one of my friends said, "Well, why don't you register it", so I did. For a while I just sat on it, and then when giving out e-mail addresses to friends on one of my machines, I'd offer them the option of having a @hotlesbiansheepaction.com address. At some point I got bored and decided that www.hotlesbiansheepaction.com should point somewhere. So I've set up www.hotlesbiansheepaction.com to be a CNAME to various sites at random, essentially saying "this address is actually a pointer for some other address". A while back it pointed to the Christian Coalition, and every so often I change it to point to some other worthwhile site, usually when I've got nothing else better to do.

I find it highly amusing that somewhere, the Republican National Committee is probably paying some poor schmoe to analyse the traffic to their site, and that guy probably runs across the phrase hotlesbiansheepaction on a random basis....

Hope this answers your question."

He explained it but to make sure, I asked a friend of mine -who owns a hosting company- to determine whether or not I was being fed a line of crap.

Sure enough, practically anyone can point their domain to any Domain Name Server (DNS) that they want via the CNAME option. I sort of knew this already but I wasn't sure how it worked, Now I do.

I'm a little sad there was no drama but It's okay. I'll live with it. There's a much better drama going on right now, due to the actions of some diligent bloggers and their WHOIS research.
