After passing a horrid bit of abortion legislation yesterday, Congress opened the floor to an all out moaning and knashing of teeth in regards to the eventually passed rollback on changes to ethics rules. Here's the way it went down: First, this guy said go.
Then these guys spoke.
Then they voted. Then this guy said, the vote to rollback was passed.
The "debate" over the rules change wasn't really much of a debate. Practically all the Republican speakers blamed the Democrats for forcing them to return the ethics rules to those of the 108th Congress. The Repugs accused the Dems of playing politics and holding them hostage. The Dems calmly repeated that the rules should never have been altered in the first place. There was talk of evil and Al Queda and the Hatfields and McCoys. La Tourette (R-Ohio) compared himself to a crucified Jesus. Buyer (R-Indiana) got spitting mad. Tom Delay (R-Texas) was noticeably absent and barely mentioned but the ghost of New Gingrich was resurrected numerous times. McGovern (D-Mass) managed to get leaked GOP talking points entered into the record. Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina) brought it all home with righteous indignation and a parting hat tip to the soldiers because he'll never forget 911...San Dimas High School football rules! After all the hubbub, the vote to rollback passed with 406 for and 20 against. Then, a friend of mine came over and I missed some of those end-of-the-day speeches the members of Congress make. After my friend left, the kid told me I missed a really good moment when one Repub speaker went off on Nancy Pelosi (D-California). Apparently some brave, little Dem protested and got a glaring look from this guy:
Then, this guy guy threw a tiny fit:
And just when I was about to turn off the C-Span, Jim McDermott (D-Washington) took the podium: Republicans really hate McDermott. Their contempt is understandable. McDermott is passionate, intelligent and a hell of an orator. McDermott also appeared in Fahrenheit 9/11 and well, you know how that goes. Jim McDermott stood before the Congress and proceeded to give the entire house a scathing Bible lesson. He quoted some of the rules laid out by God -via Moses- in the book of Deuteronomy. Some of the chapter/verses he cited were 5:14, 15:7-11. The verses old Jim spoke of pertain to the forgiveness of debt. For example: "For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land." Then, McDermott asked how a country, built on the Judeo-Christina ethic, could pass such un-Christian legislation as our new Bankruptcy Bill.
It was beautiful. |
